My dad used to say. We only know 10 percent of sound but you have crossed barriers in explaining them. I Repeat At low Volumes you can hear the notes. That what makes a speaker special and more Valuable.

I did find on Craigs list it was for about 399 dollars but it was sold to someone .. lucky Guy..

If i come across again i will surely remember you words and buy them.

Regards
Sai

I think the 33s and 35s are a step up slightly in sonics, but having only heard them at shows I can’t be sure. They all share a house sound but for me, the 22s are the bargain of the bunch. I’ve been trying to get review samples of several speakers under the $3k mark (see the SVS Ultra Tower review in the Spet 2013 issue) and will have the Bryston Mini-T’s in next. I would not be too worried about the time since the 22s were reviewed, I stand by the view that they are the one’s to beat at this price point if you like a full sound. Their ease of placement is also a real bonus in typical rooms. It’s quite difficult to describe sonics in a review so I really hope you won’t be dependent on us for much more than helping you identify likely candidates (and don’t forget, both VSA and SVS give you home trials). I’d be happy to give time to either speaker you mention (and more) so I’ll contact those companies to see if they want to play. Thanks for the suggestions.

It’s a big jump from the VR22 to your VR5s both in sound and price. I wonder what you gain by moving from the VR22 to the VR33 or even VR35? And, considering the passage of time since your review, would you consider the Vaugn Triode IIIs or the Salk soundstage 8s in this analysis. What they all have in common is we are utterly dependent on you and others for evaluation of speakers.Take care.

Is that your arrangement in the photo? Please explain the practical and esthetic differences between the 22 and the 33. Thank you.

Hard to estimate what more can be extracted from this design through crossover or wire improvement, I’d have to get Albert to comment on this. I am sure there is always a degree of refinement that can be added but I wonder how far this two-way design could ever be taken to compete with the VR5 given the latter’s dual woofers, mid and tweeter (plus rear-tweeter) structure. I suspect there might be limits in some areas which the VR22 cannot span but it would surely be interesting to know how such upgrades would affect timbre. Of course, the cost of this might defeat the whole purpose of the VR22 design and lead you into VR33/35 price territory, but if gains are to be had here, I could understand the attraction. Best wishes, Patrick.

You do a good job of providing meaningful and useful descriptions of how the speakers sound and how they compare. As an owner of the little Harbeths as well as my beloved Dunlavys, and as someone who has been contemplating trying the VR-22s, this review is very helpful. Albert offers crossover and wire upgrades for these speakers. I wonder if that would move them closer to your reference in the timbre department. Any thoughts on that?

Dan

I’ve not heard it personally but have had the pleasure of auditioning its big brother the VR33 here in my listening room, and it is outstanding. VSA builds some of the finest speakers at several price points. Do yourself a favor and check them out.
