My experience was a little different – I have tried the coaxial connection with a High Fidelity cable and not enjoyed it as much as the HDMI connection. In these cases, the volume difference between the two requires careful matching and while that coaxial path sounds very good, to my ears the Harmonic Tech HDMI just sounds a little better. If I get the chance to try the Python, I’ll report back.

I agree with you that it is an improvement over the PSAudio top of the line HDMI (which as it turns out is great for video). I too have the PWD II/PWT pair.

What blew the HDMI away, tho’, was using the coax connector to the PWD. Perhaps not as extended frequency, but overall more musical to my ears. This was true with a lower price coax (LAT international), but the big jump was in using a Shunyata Python digital RCA. An expensive cable for sure, but it shows what this digital pair is truly capable of.

I did indeed upgrade the PWD II, and described the horror of the process (but with very satisfying results) on my blog last March. No doubt, the upgrade made a further improvement in what it an excellent digital front end. PS Audio just need to work a bit harder on customer support — the instructions online and on paper were faulty, and it shipped with faulty firmware, but I got it all to work out in the end. I probably should have reviewed it at the time given the fuss the company is making over the review in TAS but I was just happy to have it working. I should check it in my rig without the preamp, I’ve just been so happy with my VRE-1 preamp that I’ve never been inclined to bypass it. If I do it, I’ll let folks know.

Have you as of yet upgraded your PS Audio perfect wave dac yet? I would be interested in finding out what you think of version 2 now recently out. I think this may be the way i will go as it also eliminates the need for a pre amp. Currently I’m using a Bryston bp25 pre amp with built in dac but i think it is almost time to upgrade. Thanks again for the clearly written and honest reviews you publish, they strike me as being free of influence by manufacturers and are value for dollar products that the majority of us can strive for.
